I first became interested in pottery out of what I now recognize as a spiritual search that has been the defining process of my life. It is out of this search that all my significant learning and work has taken place.

Clay was, and continues to be, a nurturing force and the prima materia with which to see, and to name, and to give form. This involves a process by which the image is moved through clay into form and then to 2D though mixed media drawing on paper and claybord. Then I contemplate—drawing conclusions and creating meaning. It is a circumambulation-—the act of circling around a point of reference, which is the center and contains the whole.

My work has evolved through the interaction of my studio practice with these methods, which I call, Intentional Methods. The work is an integrating force towards wholeness and a more relational consciousness, for both myself and the viewer.

The clay work is built up and modeled through pinching, throwing, and hand building, scraping and carving. The clay is then burnished, terra sigillata slip applied, and then smoke-fired, often multiple times. The drawings and claybord use a variety of media: collaged paper, graphite, oil, acrylic, and pencil.
