I make violins in Western North Carolina using traditional methods and materials.
After retiring from the US Army in 1995 I began studying all the materials I could find on the making of violins, and finally in 2004 began making violins using traditional methods and materials. By 2008 I began to experiment with local woods and harvesting Appalachian Red Spruce from downed trees in the Pisgah National Forest. This extraordinary tonewood began appearing in many of my violins beginning in 2009 with excellent results. I also began acquiring local curley maple from the South Toe Valley which is just now beginning to show up in current works.
I use the time-tested models of both Antonio Stradivari and Andreas Guarneri. I develop his own forms, and mix my own varnishes, and use no power tools once the basic outline of the violin has been cut from the original wedge of wood. |
