My work for the last twenty-five years has focused on achieving more vibrant colors at stoneware temperatures. With the development of chambered climbing kilns came decorative stoneware and porcelain. Most of my work comes out of the tradition of Hamada as he used a chambered wood kiln and fired decorated stoneware and porcelain. I especially liked his use of colored enamels applied after the glaze firing. I've always felt that there's a range of color at these temperatures that few people have explored. I began decorating using a wax resist, then later, latex resist that allows more options to surface design. Much of my work is fired rim to rim which allows the decoration to stay somewhat intact while the path of the flame can be seen on the backsides of the pots. Recently I found a deposit of primary kaolin that has allowed me to develop a porcelain body rich in impurities; mica, garnets, quartz, etc. I have opened the bag wall up to accommodate smaller bowls and yunomis as this is a sweet spot in the kiln. |
