The appreciation of nature and how it affects the spirit is what my work is about. In the expression of these ideas, familiar images from nature are used, such as leaves and petals. By taking one of these elements and repeating it over and over, or by exaggerating its form, or by making it huge, the natural world is transformed via the creative process. This allows us to see these beautiful things in a new way - as if it is the first time. Using my own unique process and materials of fabric or metal, I create wall sculpures, free-standing sculptures, and suspended works. One of my suspended fabric pieces, "Five Leaves," is part of the permanent collection of the North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville and is installed in the atrium there.
My studio is in the shadow of the Black Mountain range near Burnsville, NC. Studio visits are welcome by appointment and I accept commissions. You can contact me through my website, ilaseltzer.com and find out more about me and my sculptures. |
