Writers’ Workshops

Sat, Sept 11, 10-4pm: Fiction Writing Workshop with Brenda McClain. Class will explore such elements as story arc, characterization, voice, point of view, and dialogue. Publishing tips will also be given, and students may bring five pages (double-spaced) to the class for discussion.

Oct 8-10: Primarily a crash course that functions as a great practical/field experience for beginners, but could also be very beneficial for more advanced photographers who have limited time.

Roots + Wings Fall Classes

HERBS-Learn to identify herbs that grow locally and use them for health and beauty. We will go on nature walks to find herbs, bring some back to the bookstore and craft them into useful products.

Poetry Out Loud


Registration Deadline Sept 17: The NC Arts Council would like to invite you to become a part of Poetry Out Loud, a national poetry recitation competition for high school students, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation and the NC Arts Council.
This year, all across NC, high school students will memorize poetry to recite in front of friends, family, teachers and total strangers, and we’d like you to be part of it. Students can choose from an amazing selection of poetry that can be found at www.ncarts.org/poetryoutloud. This program is open to all high schools: public, private and home schools.


Down Home: Portraits of the Old North State


Deadline Sept 3: The Junior League of Raleigh (JLR) and Visual Art Exchange (VAE) present Down Home: Portraits of the Old North State, a juried art exhibition Oct 21-24. This exhibit is a special feature of the JLR’s A Shopping SPREE!, an annual four-day shopping fundraiser that attracts approximately 12,000 shoppers annually from around the country. Artists may enter 2 pieces exploring this year’s theme of Down Home: Portraits of the Old North State. This exhibit is open to all 2D artwork, excluding photography, by living Carolina artists. PT Program Asst-Black Mtn College Museum


Part-Time Program Assistant. The Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center in downtown Asheville, is currently looking for a part-time Program Assistant to begin as soon as possible.  Duties include: Grant writing and research; Management of membership program; Interaction with museum visitors; Assistance to Program Director with events, exhibitions, marketing, etc. Hours will consist of 12 hours per week to start and may include occasional weekends &/or evenings depending on events.

Call for CMTF Volunteers


Sept 10-11: Calling all 2010 Carolina Mountains Literary Festival Volunteers. It is almost that time again and this will be our 5th year, and we are interested in knowing who might be able to help this year. Volunteers are what help us keep going, in money, or in time, and we appreciate both-session coordinators, people to help at the Welcome Desks, for runners, for help in setting up some tents for Sat storytelling, for help with food for the presenters, audio visual equipment help, selling food with the Rotary club and  generally just help.
