Tax Seminar for Artists

Do I consider my art a hobby or a business? Do I even have to file? 4 What can I deduct? What kind of records should I keep? How do I know what to take to my CPA?

Taxes can be straightforward for artists! Sue Sevcik, a tax professional and artist, will cover complex tax concepts such as depreciation, self-employment tax, handling sales tax, and inventory. She will explain these concepts in simple terms with examples specific to artists. Sue will help show you how to take the mystery and fear out of doing a small business tax return for artists.

Workshop Presenter: Sue Sevcik, MBA, has been preparing taxes for artists and others and working as a professional glass artist, selling her work at shows and festivals, over the last 11 years. Sue worked for H&R Block for 10 years and spent 16 years as a Business Planner for IBM.

The Elizabeth Rockwell Raphael Founder’s Prize

The Elizabeth Rockwell Raphael Founder’s Prize
In 1997, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Society for Contemporary Craft, a $5,000 prize for excellence in the field of contemporary craft was established. The biennial award, which is given in conjunction with a catalogue and juried exhibition at SCC, is funded by the daughters of Elizabeth R. Raphael, the founder of SCC and a nationally known figure in the contemporary art scene for many decades.
Prizes are selected by medium, with the designated medium changing with each biennial award. The 1997 Raphael Prize recipient was Sibylle Peretti for her work in glass, “Vogelkuss-Birdkiss II.” The 1999 prize was awarded to David Sengel for his work in wood, “Haloed.” Suzan Rezac received the award in 2001 for her work in metal, “Opus Tessellatum.” The 2003 prize was awarded to Sunkoo Yuh for his work in clay, ”Memory of Pikesville, TN.” In 2005 Jim Rose received the award for his work with found materials, “Quilt Cupboard,” and in 2007 Mark Zirpel won the award for his glass work, “Pair.” The 2009 prize will be awarded for a work in wood. The 2009 Elizabeth R. Raphael Founder’s Prize competition is open to all artists working in wood. Emerging artists are especially encouraged to apply. The prize will be awarded to a work created between Sept 2008 and Aug 2009 that addresses the theme “transformation.” Jurying will take place in two phases. From the initial pool of submissions, a group of finalists will be invited to submit a work on the selected theme for the final jurying and possible inclusion in the Raphael Prize exhibition. Only one work per artist may be submitted for final jurying. All entries must be postmarked or hand-delivered by 5pm on Mon, Jan 26, 2009.
