Arts Education Call to Action


Arts Education Call to Action. On Wednesday, March 25th, at 10am in Room 643 in the Legislative Office Building, the Senate Committee on Education/Higher Education is scheduled to hear and discuss Senate Bill 66, requiring all students to have one unit in arts education for graduation. In order for the bill to be heard and voted on by the full Senate, it must be favorably adopted by the Education/Higher Education Committee. Packing the room with arts education requirement supporters is absolutely critical. Please mark your calendars and make your plans to be in Raleigh on March 25th. More details will follow as they are confirmed.

Triad Stage - Marketing Assistant


Triad Stage - Marketing Assistant. Part time (25 hours/week)
Primary responsibilities: Create and coordinate the production of collateral materials including show programs, inserts, brochures, flyers and signage; Develop and implement marketing campaigns to attract non-traditional audiences for productions in the MainStage and UpStage Cabaret venues; Contact local businesses to sell advertising in show programs; Maintain the company’s website and social networking pages and increase viewership; Create print and web based advertisements; Assist in group sales efforts, community outreach and new audience research; Scan press articles and create press kits for artists; Maintain department files and databases; Occasional distribution of show posters and fliers to area businesses; Oversee projects for part-time college intern
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree; Excellent computer skills – Word, Excel, Outlook and graphic/web design software (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator) a must. Knowledge of HTML, PowerPoint, Acrobat and Flash a plus. PC environment.
Marketing and/or publicity experience; prior experience or a strong interest in theater or the performing arts is essential; Good communication skills, multitasking and project management skills and strong interpersonal skills; Ability to meet and anticipate deadlines

Public Art Coordinator Wanted-Raleigh


The Raleigh Arts Commission is seeking a Public Art Coordinator, 32 hours/week, one year contract. Coordinate development of public art for the City as part of a new percent for art program. Develop strategic plan, timeline and budget and manage project implementation from selection and commissions through installation. BA/BFA (concentration in visual arts/art history, or related fields); graduate degree in arts and/or related business field preferred. Professional level experience required. Salary: $50,000 range. ACC Regional Conference


The 2009 American Craft Council Southeast Regional Conference will be held at Kennesaw State University, in Kennesaw, GA., one of metropolitan Atlanta’s burgeoning northwest suburban communities. The Conference with the Spotlight Exhibition date is August 20-23. Deadline for entry for the Spotlight Exhibition is June 1. The exhibition dates are Aug 20 to Sep 24. Call for entries: New Woodworker - Design Gallery


This summer Brian Boggs will be curating a show at the Design Gallery in Burnsville. This is an exhibit dedicated to showcasing the work of new woodworkers in the western NC area as well as new work by established makers. Particular focus will be on furniture but accessories are also welcome. This show will be running concurrent with the Furniture Society’s annual conference held this year in Boone. Opening day is June 5 and it closes on July 4. It should be a great opportunity to get exposure for some of your new design work. 52nd National Multi-Media Juried Art Exhibition


52nd National Multi-Media Juried Art Exhibition  at the Rocky Mount Arts Center. Open to all US artists 18 or older working in any media excluding installation. The work selected for the Best in Show Purchase Award will become part of the Arts Center’s Permanent Collection. Deadline is March 20. Coming Soon! Yancey Center for Ceramic Art


Coming Soon! The Yancey Center for Ceramic Art will be opening in April at 1073 Hwy 19E, the location previously used by Yancey Crafted Tile. Our goal is to promote the ceramic arts, by providing instruction and services to all those interested in ceramics, regardless of their level of expertise. We will be offering classes, workshops and seminars thoughout the year on a variety of subjects and techniques in ceramics. It is our desire to offer as many opportunities as possible in a field of ceramics for the most reasonable cost. We are also please to announce that you can take classes through Mayland Community College at our facility.

After-school Art Program with Vislocky


After-school Art Programs with Anna Vislocky - Life Drawing. In this series of interactive and fun lessons, students will learn a variety of drawing techniques. We will draw the human figure, portraits of ourselves and each other. We will go outside to observe nature and draw what we see! The class is appropriate for all ages.
Dates: SESSION 1 - Tuesdays: March 31, April 7, 21, 28
SESSION 2 – Tuesdays: May 5, 12, 19, 26
Time: 3 – 4:30 pm
Cost: $20 per session, please pay in full before the first day of class. An additional fee of $1.50 will cover materials and allow students to take home an artist’s drawing pencil and eraser.
Location: Celo Community Center (across from the Celo Health Center. Class will be held downstairs.
Parents may write a request to schools for bus drop off at the Community Center.

Anna Vislocky has taught art in various schools including Burnsville Elementary, Bald Creek Elementary, Deyton Elementary, Spruce Pine Montessori and others. She has taught summer art camps and private lessons.

Demos will include acrylic, watercolor or acrylic under-painting, and water soluble oil techniques.
Artist will work in media of their choice. Palettes of water-soluble oil paints and mediums will be provided. During morning demos, you will learn techniques in brushwork, mixing colors, perspective, lighting, shadows, reflections and composition.
