On January 11th from 5 to 8 p.m. the Burnsville TRAC gallery will premier its first exhibit of 2008 entitled “Carl Peverall From New Zealand”. This exciting presentation of paintings by Mr. Peverall is the result of his extensive trip to New Zealand last year.
Carl’s artistry is diverse and well known throughout North Carolina and the East from Florida to New York. During his lifetime as an artist, he has studied and excelled in various mediums including ceramics, painting and even metalwork. He believes that each of these “offer unique expressive qualities” that he loves “like different children of the same family”.
“It occasionally seems that limiting my work to a single medium would make life simpler particular from the business, “product identity” side of the profession but that just doesn’t seem to be my way. For me, focusing too much on one thing imposes an overbearing demand on a single medium that brings vulnerability to overworking and burnout”.
Peverall’s art, artistic background and involvement in the art community is impressive to say the least. He has been an instructor for the Winston-Salem Arts Council, the Greenwich House in New York, served on the Board of Directors for Toe River Arts Council for two years and was President of TRAC’s board during 2002. His exhibits and collections include such locations as The Blue Spiral I in Asheville, the Mint Museum in Charlotte, the Amazoni Gallery in New York and a multitude of other places too lengthly to list in this article.
He met his first two mentors while attending a class at Penland during 1971. At that time, according to Carl, “Cynthia Bringle and Paul Minnis were painters who had been seduced by clay as a surface for brushwork. It was the beauty of their glazing that sparked my interest in painting. This led to discovering the value of nature and the landscape as a limitless resource of formal art knowledge and emotional inspiration”.
Peverall’s stay in New Zealand sparked his connection with Nature. “In my work (and in most art), contrast and balance are fundamental concerns. Going outside to paint on location is the perfect counterpoint to the introspective nature of my studio ceramic work”.
The amazing beauty of the New Zealand countryside acted as an inspirational catalyst for Peverall resulting in his creation of numerous landscape paintings. These paintings are the heart of his exhibit “Carl Peverall From New Zealand” which can be seen at TRAC from January 5th thru February 16th.
