Writer Cynthia Reeves is the 2018 “Art of the Climate” resident at Art + Science In the Field: AS IF Center. Her current project is a trilogy of novellas entitled The Comfort of Water, set on the Svalbard archipelago, where in June 2017 she shared the Arctic Circle Summer Solstice expedition with 31 other artists. Two events—a workshop on using science in creative writing, and a talk about her adventures in the Arctic and how they have inspired her writing.

Featuring forged and manipulated metal work by participants in the Fire on the Mountain Festival that is held on lower street (Locust Street)  in downtown Spruce Pine the final Saturday of the exhibition. A beer and pizza reception is held on Friday, April 27 from 5 to 7pm.

In celebration of the bi-annual studio tour, participants are invited to share two examples of their pieces in an showcase that is arranged geographically to facilitate route planning during tour weekend.
A reception is held the first evening of the tour, Friday, June 1 from 5:30 to 7:30pm..

The Making of the Telescope

We celebrate the making of the first Gateway Telescope at the entrance to Burnsville. Planning began years ago with a plan and a proposal from Seattle public art designer, Jack Mackie. With the assistance from several funders and individuals, the first glass tower is scheduled to be installed this spring. This exhibit details the process and recognizes the seven artists who blew glass to fill the metal telescopic cages.

Bi-annual, self-guided arts tour of studios and galleries in the two county area—Mitchell and Yancey. Over 80 artists participate and open their studio doors for the 3-day event that runs from 10am to 5pm, Friday through Saturday.
A gala reception, always packed and free and open to the public is planned for the first day of the tour, June 1 from 5:30-7:30 pm at the Toe River Arts Spruce Pine Gallery. Read more … press release (1)

JUNE 23-JULY 28 : Return to the Land of my Ancestors

This informative and historically charges exhibit featuring the ancestry and work of Robert Alvin Crum, a direct descendant of Daniel Boone and his wife, Rebecca Bryan. Through is paintings, he explores his connections with his past generations.

Bringle’s exhibit represents all the different media in which she has worked over the years. The show offers some older ceramic work and some newer work, glass-beading, wood-working, and paintings—a multi-dimensional display, from past to present and into the future. A reception will be held on Saturday, July 28 from 5 to 7pm.

This exhibit seeks to transport the viewer beyond the realm of seeing dolls as playthings for children to having them understand how a figurative piece created with the vision and skill of a talented maker transforms them into works of art.
Presented by the Go Figure group of 30 regional doll makers.
