“Nature’s forces, both calm and chaotic have long been the foundation of my work. I reference this organic energy with color, mark-making and texture. My paintings can be still and quiet, or can evoke energy and turbulence. I work in many media including paper, jewelry, wood and metals.
I mix a range of media into my paint pigments to create a range of viscosities. I pour, squeeze, brush, drip, fling and smear layers of paint, often waiting days for each layer to dry before moving on. This very fluid foundation allows me to use glazing techniques as well as feature brush marks and palette knife work. At times I squeeze heavy paint directly from the tube, using it as a drawing tool to create strong lines and defined movements. As of late I have begun to return to mixed media where I am combining my images, using paint and silk. Often these images are of moments in my life or moments I imagine will someday come.” — Beth Kokol
