Unique, saggar fired egg vase with textured and black line. Vase is 6″ wide at widest point and 8″ tall.

For more than 25 years, Martin Stankus has crafted unique clay creations specializing in Saggar and Raku fired pottery and outdoor garden sculptures. After retiring as a Raleigh city planner, Martin moved to the mountains of Burnsville, built a new studio and pursues pottery full-time.

He creates his Saggar earthenware using an excitingly combustive firing method. Natural elements such as sugar, salt, and leaves are artfully arranged on the pot, and wrapped in aluminum foil before firing in an outdoor kiln. The combination of fire, smoke and fumes create an individually unique surface design which he then cleans, waxes and buffs to a silky smooth surface.Â
